Children’s Dentistry on the Upper West Side, NYC

As a family dentist, Dr. Kirsch provides the full range of pediatric dentistry services as well as adult and cosmetic dentistry. At 86th Street Dental Center, we love meeting our adult patients’ children and introducing them to life-long, healthy dental habits. We typically begin seeing children around the time their first tooth emerges to ensure their primary teeth are in good health and protect them until their permanent teeth appear. By meeting and getting to know your child when they are young, we can establish a trust-based dental care relationship to protect their oral health now and in the future.

We Offer the Following Children’s Dentistry Services

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

The first visit to a family dentist can be frightening for a child if they are unprepared. However, the first appointment with Dr. Kirsch is short and focuses on establishing a rapport between your child and our dental care team. Your child may sit on your lap in the dental chair while Dr. Kirsch examines their teeth and gums. At some point, you may be asked to wait in the reception area while Dr. Kirsch establishes a friendly relationship with your child and addresses any of their fears.

During the exam, we may take x-rays to check for tooth decay and chart the progress of the permanent teeth under the gums. Dr. Kirsch will explain in detail how to care for your child’s teeth at home and discuss the need, if any, for fluoride supplements at home. A gentle tooth cleaning and applying topical fluoride help protect against tooth decay.

Preparing Your Child for Their First Dental Checkup

As an experienced kids’ dentist, Dr. Kirsch strives to put every child at ease and establish a trust-based relationship that will last a lifetime. As a parent, you can help by preparing your child for their first visit. Talk about the visit positively, reminding your child that you visit the dentist regularly and enjoy seeing the dental care team. Treat the visit as something to look forward to, not a punishment or something to be dreaded. If your child feels they are going on an adventure, they are more likely to enjoy their visit.

A few ways to prepare your child for their first visit include:

  • Talking about your own trips to the family dentist in a positive way
  • Reading children’s books together about visiting the dentist.
  • Scheduling a visit to our office to introduce them to our dental care team and get them used to the setting. Being greeted by a friendly face on the day of their appointment will put your child at ease.
  • Explaining what Dr. Kirsch will do and why it is important

How Often Should My Child Visit the Dentist?

Regular exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments protect your child’s dental health and smile. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a visit to the dentist every six months for children. This allows us to follow their oral health and catch any potential problems, including cavities, before they cause pain or lead to more serious issues.

Preventive Care & Oral Hygiene for Children

Establishing regular trips to the dentist is essential for your child’s health. Early checkups and professional teeth cleanings protect their primary and permanent teeth as they develop. Preventing cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease minimizes your child’s risk of complications. Poor dental health in children can lead to pain, difficulty concentrating, infections, and premature loss of their teeth. Healthy teeth are crucial for speaking clearly, eating comfortably, and smiling without embarrassment.

At your child’s first dental appointment, we will carefully explain the proper brushing technique and demonstrate how to floss. Younger children may need to be assisted at home to ensure they are brushing and flossing adequately. Keep these tips in mind when helping your child protect and care for their teeth:

  • A soft bristle brush is best for cleaning without damaging enamel or sensitive gum tissue.
  • Fluoride toothpaste provides the best protection against cavities.
  • Your child should not use a fluoride rinse until they are at least six years old.
  • Gently guide your child’s hands to train them in proper brushing technique until you are confident they can brush effectively independently.
  • Check periodically for changes in your child’s teeth and gums. If you see anything that causes concern, contact our office for an appointment.
  • Limit between-meal snacks, especially sugary or sticky foods
  • Choose nutritious snacks
  • Avoid sugary sodas and drinks
  • Limit the number of meals and snacks throughout the day
  • Be sure your child is brushing and flossing every day
